The Class of '76 is a cohort of Collège Churchill High School graduates and friends, who have reconnected to plan a reunion commemorating the 50th anniversary of our graduation and to undertake other initiatives, as our legacy . Our common goal is the desire to use our skills, experience and network to give back to the community and school which prepared us for our adult lives. Our group includes people from all walks of life: teachers, architects, engineers, lawyers, military veterans, designers, accountants, nurses, artists, musicians, homemakers, caregivers ... many of whom still reside in the community. We have classmates who have enjoyed accolades and awards for their distinguished careers and classmates who are everyday unsung heroes. What we have in common is our community spirit and the desire to give back.
The Class of '76 started with the idea of creating a memorable 50th reunion. Our group has a shared interest in leaving a legacy for the community while upholding the 'PRIDE and TRADITION" of the school, including the values of:
• inclusion
• tolerance
• transparency
• sustainability
• best practices.
We set out to pick a memorable name for our student award, concise and distinguishable from the nearly 30 prizes currently presented. The initiative was taken by the Class of '76 prior to their "golden" reunion and is part of our legacy. We had many great suggestions. Once we decided to launch a website and start organizing the alumni association, the Golden Bulldogs made sense. It was a "golden" opportunity to score a premium domain.
We are planning our reunion and have created a student award and an endowment fund. Fundraising activities in support of the student award and our other initiatives, include:
• corporate sponsorship
• private donations
• events
• merchandise
We are also organizing alumni as a resource for the school community and to ensure the continuity of our endeavours.
We are community-minded. We have lived through nearly seven decades of tremendous change in the world and want to give back in a meaningful and enduring way. We want to recognize the efforts of a student who exemplifies our values and spirit.
Our planning committee of volunteers is as follows:
Mike Belanger
Douglas Buchanan
Patric Colpitts
Laura Cowie
John Darracott
Andy Dodd
Teresa Dodds
Charlotte Duggan
Elaine Egan
Josephine (Russo) Hunter
Terry Miller
Susan Paquette
Paul Stewart
Bill Townsley
Val Palsson
Gary Timlick
Martino Vergata
Our fundraising activities will commence in spring 2025 with planning underway for a series of events. We will evaluate our progress in the autumn. The first award will be given at graduation in 2026 and annually thereafter . Our reunion events will occur in the summer of 2026.
Our fundraising target in 2025 is $30k. The minimum investment in the interest-bearing endowment is $23k, ensuring the award will be presented in perpetuity.
There are many ways to help, from financial contributions to support for our events. Here are more ways to HELP.
Funds intended for the student award are deposited directly to our endowment fund with The Winnipeg Foundation. Funds for specific and general expenses, as specified by the donor, will be used for the designated expense or general nominal expenses we are incurring for administration, printing, our website, etc. We are 100% volunteer driven and there are no paid employees.
The catchment area for Collège Churchill High School includes three business districts: South Osborne, Corydon Village and Osborne Village. We are supporting local businesses as much as possible.
If the target is not met, we will decide on how to use the proceeds with our team of volunteers and the school administration. We will review our progress in the autumn of 2025.
Funds raised in excess of our target will go to our endowment fund at The Winnipeg Foundation.
TWF is a community organization, built through generous gifts of all sizes, that are pooled and permanently invested. The interest earned from these endowments generates a sustainable source of support for local charitable projects.
The Winnipeg Foundation is Canada’s first community foundation, established in 1921. In 2024, they received 8,347 gifts and distributed $91.6 million to the community. LEARN MORE HERE.
Our group is not a registered charity and as such cannot issue tax receipts. Creating an endowment fund with The Winnipeg Foundation provides our supporters with tax receipts.
